FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS PATHWAYS?
Pathways to Prosperity is a new program of United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in Seattle, aimed at alleviating poverty in the Native community by providing the tools and knowledge needed to break the cycle of poverty and start down a new pathway to prosperity. We do this by offering dynamic and diverse programming, case management and assistance in three areas: economic empowerment, career and employment services, and education.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST ME TO ATTEND PATHWAYS EVENTS?
All programs are free to Pathways clients.
THERE MUST BE A CATCH. WHAT’S MY OBLIGATION TO PATHWAYS?
We ask only that you sit down with a Pathways staff member and officially enroll in the Pathways Program by doing a short registration form. By providing this information to us, you will help us articulate the need and demand for our programming to our funders and potential funders. Your personal information will be kept completely confidential.
There is no other obligation. You may participate in as many or as few programs as you’d like.
I’M NOT AN ENROLLED MEMBER OF MY TRIBE. AM I STILL ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
You do not need to be an enrolled member of a tribe to participate. While our programs are aimed at the Native community, they are open to anyone.
I THOUGHT UNITED INDIANS WAS JUST ABOUT HEAD START AND THE SEA-FAIR POW WOW. WHY WOULD THEY PROVIDE THESE PROGRAMS TOO?
United Indians of All Tribes Foundation was established in 1970 as a non-profit serving the myriad needs of Seattle’s Native community. While Head Start and the annual pow wow are our most popular programs, United Indians has been providing various programming for nearly 40 years.
Pathways to Prosperity, specifically, is a program created through a generous grant by the Northwest Area Foundation and supported by Key Foundation, the Administration of Native Americans, and others.
I HAVE AN EMERGENCY AND NEED CASH ASSISTANCE. CAN PATHWAYS GIVE ME A CASH GIFT?
No, but if you are registered in the Pathways Program and have graduated from some of our financial education and other classes, you may be eligible for a micro-loan. Our microloan program resources are very limited, so we can only offer this to those clients who are fully participating in our programs and have demonstrated the ability to pay back the loan over time.
Registered Pathways clients may also be eligible to have the savings they contribute to an individual development account matched 1:1 by Pathways. To participate in this program, clients must commit to taking our financial education classes and using their savings for asset building only.
PATHWAYS ISN’T OFFERING THE SERVICES I NEED THE MOST. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Contact any of our staff anyways. The Pathways staff have relationships with service agencies throughout the region that we are happy to refer you to. Also, if we hear from a lot of our clients that we should add a service or class to our program we will do our best to do so.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER PROGRAM I COULD ACCESS IN KING COUNTY?
Pathways is a program for Native people by Native people and our friends. The pathways we provide are the ones that you, the Native community, have told us you need the most. At the heart of our Pathways programming is our shared Native cultural values. As such, there is cultural programming and emphasis on holistic healing and wellness threaded throughout all we do. We have learned that in order to truly find the pathway to prosperity we must change unhealthy behaviors and self-destructive tendencies. Only then will Pathways members be able to climb the ladder out of poverty to prosperity with the tools and knowledge they gain from our program.
